 Assignment 6: resolving names and what's in a name?INSS427
From a PC workstation at the lab, at home or office find the following information for the machine:
- The IP address, FQDN and alias (if any) to the HOME (NT) Web server.
- The NetBIOS name and MAC address for the machine.
- Check what is in the ARP cache and Route Table and explain them. Write the most important items in the Route Table and explain what they mean.
- Do a traceroute from the machine to www.redhat.com (or another Web site) and explain the traceroute results (copy them) mean. Note the time in the last hop and ping www.redhat.com. Compare the time results of traceroute and ping and explain why they may vary, if at all.
- At the console type: net name, net user, net localgroup, and net view. What results did you obtain? Copy and paste from the console to a text file and, later on include these results in your report.
Note: to copy from DOS or Windows console to an Windows application click on the MSDOS symbol in the left-most top-most area of the console and select edit, mark. Move your mouse and highlight the selection. Click again on the MSDOS symbol and select edit, copy. Then paste in Windows. To paste from Windows to DOS click on the MSDOS symbol and select edit, paste.
