Usually sold with 4, 8, 16 or 24 ports
May allow connection of more than one kind of cabling, such as UTP and coax.
Repeat (reconstruct and strengthen) incoming signals
- Important since all signals become weaker with distance
- Extends the maximum LAN segment distance
