type MENU at the $ prompt
you will see a menu like this.
type 13 to select archie, and enter the name of a program to seach.
after some time you will see a list of sites that have the program. Most of these sites support anonymous ftp for downloading.
reading the list can be tedious if the program you are searching for is popular, because you will receive plenty.
here is an example of one entry:
Host ftp.cyberspace.com Location: /pub/ppp/mac/netscape FILE -rw-r--r-- 758443 Nov 20 01:36 netscape093.sit.hqx
The host, directory and file names are listed, as well as, the program size and date it was saved.
you can also type directly telnet archie.name.edu -- name can vary (see Krol, chapter 9), login: archie , and issue the command prog filename. See an example here.
the easiest way is to go to the Archie Request Form.
their Web address (URL) is http://www.thegroup.net/AA.html
you can access other gophers by selecting other gopher systems, and continue from there.
one of the items you can choose under other gopher systems, is to conduct searches using Veronica by keywords. This will let you find information on files that contain a given keyword throughout the Net. See an example here.
