Unziping and uncompressing the file

• gzip -d john-1.X.tar.gz ... this unzips the file

• tar -xvf john-1.X.tar ... this uncompresses and creates a directory john-1.6 with the install files

Compiling the Sources

• cd john-1.X/src

• make

  You'll get a list of supported systems. Select one of them, and type:

• make SYSTEM (RedHat on Intel should be: make linux-x86-any-elf)

  or, if your system is not listed, try:

  make generic

• If everything goes well, this will create the John binary in run/john.

  You can then copy the run directory anywhere you like: these are all the files that John needs at runtime.
