Reference Apps Common to iOS and Android
This project was born on the need to use PCs, a Mac, iPad, Android
Tablet and Smartphone at different times and locations. The idea behind
this tutorial is to be able to use the same Apps, or very similar, in
these different devices and ecosystems. I found that many (if not most)
software developers develop Apps for an ecosystem and port them to the
others. At the time of this writing iOS and Android dominate the mobile
market, so this work is limited to these two ecosystems.
There is no absolute best set of Apps, but rather Apps that
individuals feel are better for them. Even the categories of Apps may
vary depending upon the author preferences and uses. These are my
Reference Apps Common to iOS and Android
- E-book readers: Barnes and Noble Nook, Amazon Kindle and Google eBooks are free and can be used in both Android and iOS, in addition Apple iBooks can be installed from the App Store in iOS devices.
- Dictionaries: Merriam Webster: iOS from App Store and Android from Android Market. Nook allows download of a free copy of Merriam-Webster’s Pocket Dictionary. French Dictionary for a free trial period in iOS and in Android. The traditional Larousse French dictionary is only $7.00 for iOS and Android. There are a variety of other dictionaries free for a trial period for Android: Italian, German , Spanish, Chinese,
and many other languages. After the trial period the cost is around $10
for both Android and iOS. There are many other paid language
dictionaries for iOS and Android as reviewed in these sites.
- Encyclopedia: Wikipedia for iOS and Android: Wikidroid and Quickpedia Apps. There are no Britannica Encyclopedia free Apps. There is a paid version for Android and iPAD. In addition the Britannica Kids Apps are available for iOS.
- Libraries: PubGet for iPAD delivers full text journal articles; WolframAlpha for iOS and Android provides technical and scientific search abilities; arXiv
for iOS stores over a half million e-prints in Physics, Mathematics,
Nonlinear Sciences, Computer Science, Quantitative Biology,
Quantitative Finance, and Statistics; LexisNexis Get Cases & Shepardize for iOS, and CourtLink from LexisNexis for Android allow legal research; WorldCat
Mobile for iOS use mobile devices to find materials in libraries near
you (the Android version is no longer in the Android Market); The
Chronicle of Higher Education for iPad provide academic news and articles.
- Other: Citrix Receiver for iOS and Android (overview) - provide online access to UB software: ArcGIS, SPSS, SAS, etc.
