In my time at Rotch, the architecture and urban planning library at MIT, I have had amazing opportunities to explore a wide variety of functions within an academic library; while directly meeting the information needs of researchers both within and outside the MIT community. In my primary role, as Stacks Manager, I act as the public face of Rotch, providing regular circulation services, basic reference and expert referrals. I also serve as manager for our student workers. In this capacity I have been given a fantastic chance to work closely with some of the dynamic students of MIT, ranging from first year undergrads to masters candidates in a variety of disciplines.
I actively seek opportunities to grow my experience beyond my core job description. I have helped draft system-wide desk staff core competencies for the Integrated Services Group (ISG), and am a member of the Research and Instructional Support Group (RISG). As part of my service to RISG I have worked on task forces that have drafted a system-wide reference service vision statement, redefined the way in which reference statistics are collected, and acted as convener to a group tasked with collecting and disseminating public service documentation for reference staff.
In addition, I have also volunteered for a number of other system-wide initiatives and events. As member of the 2009-2010 orientation committee I have had the opportunity to meet with perspective and incoming first year students at a variety of events, including acting as organizer for a highly successful ice cream social. At events such as the MIT Technology Vendors Fair and the Educational Technology Fair I have also provided outreach to the community as a whole.
Borders Books gave me a fantastic opportunity to serve in a wide variety of organizational roles, while remaining focused on the central goal of uniting customers with solutions to their many unique information and personal needs. The company has also given me the ability to get to know three very different communities, in San Diego and San Francisco, California, and in Boston, Massachusetts. Each of these three stores acted as a center for three very different populations, and I have enjoyed learning about each so as to better serve their information needs. In San Diego I served a wide variety of visitors and locals, the San Francisco store was dominated by nearby residents and baseball fans from the nearby Giants stadium, and Boston served as a hub for both tourists and those working in the financial district.
Beyond acting as a bookseller, I served in a number of supervisor roles in both San Francisco and Boston. I coordinated, and trained, a successful Loss Prevention team, and acted as in-store auditor at Mission Bay in San Francisco. I also stepped in to serve as interim-supervisor of the Café, and as Inventory Supervisor. At the Downtown Crossing store in Boston I served as HR Supervisor; and, in that capacity I was responsible for coordinating the daily schedules of up to 78 employees in one of the highest sales volume stores in the nation. I also assisted the HR Manager in all hiring decisions.
