COMPENSATION AND PERFORMANCE
MANAGEMENT
Course
Description
This is an advanced course intended for those choosing careers in Human
Resources and/or those who will have key responsibilities in
Compensation and/or Benefits Administration.
Involves a study of the objectives,
procedures and problems involved in the establishment and
administration of operative and executive compensation plans. Detailed
examinations of job descriptions and evaluations, wage and salary
structures, performance ratings, incentive systems, related legislation
and benefit options are the focus of course works. Prerequisite:
MGMT300 and concurrent enrollment in MGMT301.
Course
Format
The attached course calendar lists the reading assignments, which are
to be completed for each due date. The material will be necessary for
class discussion and activities. For each class meeting, there will
usually be a discussion of key concepts followed by an exercise, case,
or activity that illustrates concepts or facilitates skill building.
You will need to be prepared for each class meeting and attendance is
required (except for instances of inclement weather, illness, or family
emergency).

Student
Responsibilities
1. Completion of all readings and assignments before each class meeting.
2. Active involvement and participation in
the activities of each class meeting including group work.
3. Demonstration of respect for other class members by using their time
carefully, listening to others' contributions, engaging in meaning
dialogue.
4. Adherence to the University of Baltimore
Academic Integrity Policy detailed in the Student Handbook, "Academic
honesty is based on the principle that one's work is one's own ... etc."
5. Completion of exams on the assigned date. Make up exams will be
allowed with a medical excuse.
Learning
Outcomes
By the end of the course, the student will be able to:
1. Identify and describe the continuing
influence of government on compensation practices.
2. Perform a job analysis, write job descriptions, evaluate jobs,
design and perform a pay survey, develop a pay structure.
3. Describe various kinds of pay-for-performance programs and the
situations in which such programs may be preferable.
4. Compare strengths, weaknesses, and opportunities for various kinds
of performance appraisal programs.
5. Manage a compensation program.
6. Develop a comprehensive compensation communication package.
7. Develop a compensation policy manual for an organization.
8. Recognize differences in compensation opportunities for employees in
different jobs, in different locations (international), and at
different levels in the organization.

Final Grades will be calculated as follows:
A = 93 and above (372 or more points)
A- = 90 - 92 (360-371 points)
B+ = 87 - 89 (348-359 points)
B = 83 - 86 (332-347 points)
B- = 80 - 82 (320-331 points)
C+ = 77 - 79 (308-319 points)
C = 73 - 76 (292-307 points)
C- = 70 - 72 (280-291 points)
D = Below 70 (279 or below)
Examinations will be a combination
of multiple choice and essay questions. Reading and lecture material
will be covered by the formal type of question and applications of
concepts will be covered by short cases or essay questions.
You will need to purchase an answer
sheet at the bookstore and bring a pencil for each exam.
Exercises will usually be done in a
group during class time. Each participant will sign his or her name to
the document the group submits for a grade.
The Oral and Written Reports will be
done individually on a topic selected from the following list. The oral
report will be provided to the class in 15 minutes. Class members will
be provided with an Executive Summary of the report on the day of the
presentation. The written report will be no more than 10 pages of text
(appendices may. be on additional pages) and will provide full
citations for all sources used.
