Dr. Rajesh Mirani has been on the
faculty of the Merrick School since 1990. He teaches both graduate and undergraduate courses, in the traditional classroom environment as well as
entirely on the Web. His teaching experience ranges from technical courses such as business data communications, systems analysis, and accounting information systems, to
more managerially oriented courses such as information resource management, information systems planning, and end user support. He has also delivered graduate instruction for
the University
of Baltimore to faculty members of the Universidad Nacional
de Lomas de Zamora, in Buenos Aires, Argentina, with live translation of his
English lectures into Spanish, in the year 2000. Currently, the course he teaches most often is INSS 640 -- Information Technology for Business Transformation -- required for all
MBA students. Dr. Mirani stays in close touch with
information systems practices in industry through research and consulting
projects. In his classroom, he frequently employs the case study teaching method to convey lessons from the business world to his students. He
is particularly interested in business and systems alignment, and designs his research studies around this issue.
For example, in a couple of recent papers, he has examined the effectiveness
of technology offshoring endeavors. His research papers have been published
in highly reputed, peer-reviewed journals such as Decision Sciences,
Information & Management, Journal of MIS, and MIS Quarterly. Dr. Mirani has often represented the
Merrick School and UB on various technology-related boards, committees,
conferences, and occasions, including the MBNA e-Learning Center Advisory
Board, the RFP committee for e-learning services, the Information Management
Advisory Committee (IMAC), the Online Learning Planning Committee, USM's
"Pedagogy Using Technology Day," etc. He has also consulted with
local and state government agencies such as the Maryland Department of
Transportation (MDOT), Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DHMH), and
Baltimore City Department of Social Services (BCDSS). Dr. Mirani was the
2009 holder of the Merrick School's Turner Service Medallion and
the Dean Costello Service Award. He was also the recipient of this latter
award in 2006 and 2001, the Black and Decker Research Award in 2008, and a
special recognition award from BCDSS in 2002. In addition, he has served as
President of the Merrick School Faculty Senate and member of the University
Faculty Senate in 2007-08 and 2008-09. |
