Mini-project 4: Tailoring Windows 95

INSS315 - Spring 1997

Each group should prepare a report responding the following questions. Please DO NOT change system configuration in the lab machines with Windows 95 installed.

  1. Create an account for your group and:

    1. create shortcuts in the desktop for the explorer, control panel, "my computer", MS-DOS prompt and regedit. Explain what you did.
    2. at what resolution is the screen set? How do you change to others, if possible? What are the other possibilities, if any (DO NOT CHANGE).
    3. how can you change the background of your desktop? And the screensaver? Change both and tell how you did it.
    4. how can you create a compressed drive in the existing drive? Tell what program you can use, start it and get information to do it (available space, etc), but do NOT do it.

  2. Check if the cleanup for installing Windows 95 was well done:

    1. DOS 6 and Windows 3.1 files that should have been deleted, for Windows 95 does not use them, nor deletes them, were deleted. List the ones that were not, if any.

    2. Groups that should have been removed, for no files existed for them, were deleted. List the ones that were not, if any

  3. Use the lab machine and:

    1. List the hardware installed in the system, known to Windows 95.

    2. How can I undelete a file? Explain what happens to deleted files in Windows 95, and what can be done to recover them.

    3. Run a diagnostic of the system and check its performance. List the results you obtained.

    4. What can be done to improve the performance (DON'T DO IT), without buying more equipment -- be specific.

    5. How can you setup different user profiles in Windows 95? Explain in detail.

  4. The lab machines are not connected to the network. What is needed to do in order to have TCP/IP connection installed in these machines? (BUT DO NOT DO IT). Be specific in telling me what is needed and how to do it.
