What is Telnet?

• Telnet concept

  • a terminal program: allow us to connect to a remote computer.
  • not that smart: makes your PC behave like a dumb terminal, using VT-100 emulation.
  • but let us control a remote computer and issue command line, non-graphical, instructions.
  • You can use basic file commands like:
    • directory listing
    • create a directory
    • change directory
    • copy, rename and delete directories
    • copy, rename and delete files

• Starting Telnet in Windows

  Select start, programs, acessories, telnet, or double-click on the telnet icon at the desktop if you have one. Then type the machine name to connect to, like in ubmail.ubalt.edu, as shown in this example and click on connect. The login of the remote machine will appear, as shown in this example with UBmail as the remote machine.

  Log in UBMail and at the $ prompt type telnet machine name, like in telnet mis.ubalt.edu, as shown in this example.

How to enter commands in remote computers?

• The remote is an Unix machine

  Basic file commands in UNIX

  • How to obtain a directory listing: ls and ls -a

  • How to create, remove, change to, and know de present directory. The commands mkdir , rmdir , cd , pwd.

  • How to copy, move, delete, type. Use cp , mv , rm -i , cat.

• The remote is UBMail, UBE, UBA

  • How to obtain a directory listing and change directories: dir and set default

  • How to create and remove a directory: create/dir and del name.dir;1

  • How to copy, rename, delete, type: similar to DOS.
