Al Bento Web Software Collection

Welcome! You are reader . This is a collection of software to develop web pages, created by Al Bento at the Merrick School of Business, University of Baltimore. These software packages run either in Windows NT, Linux or Windows 95/8. This page requires a browser that supports table extensions. Links in this page are, in most cases, to downloading sources or software vendors, not to tutorials. The only general exceptions are software type headers. The Web Learning page of SELECT has a substantial collection of references and tutorials related to these software packages.

This is not an endorsement or recommendation of these products, just the software I use most frequently since March 1994, when I started to take the Web more seriously, and assumed more responsibilities in the Internet with the creation of CIS-L (Careers, Trends and Opportunities in Information Systems) as an Internet/Bitnet discussion list (today CIS-L is a Web conference board).

Netscape Communicator 4.x and Internet Explorer 5 also contain free IMAP compliant e-mail packages.	Unix Pine (telnet or open a shell-window and type Pine): allows access to UBMail mailbox from office, labs, classrooms. Netscape Communicator 4.x is perhaps a better alternative for it has a IMAP compliant e-mail component. FTP -- uploading and downloading files using TCP/IP (the Net, Ubmail, etc).	WS_FTP 32: multi-thread, fast and very simple to setup. HTML - Editor Homesite : There is a free and a commercial version. A text HTML editor that supports Java Applet tags, forms, frames, etc. The best Windows 95/NT text editor. Macromedia Dreamweaver includes Homesite, but is not free. Netscape Composer is free and a good graphical HTML editor. asWedit: a text editor for Linux, similar to Homesite, and the free version is quite good. HTML Publisher add-on for WordPerfect WordPerfect 8 and above: the best way to create tables to be exported to the Web, allows creating or converting WordPerfect files to the Web -- works as a superb "what you see is what you get" Web editor. WordPerfect 8 for Linux: there is a free version available for individual users and another version which is commercial. Graphics - presentation MS PowerPoint is a good tool to create and convert graphical presentations to the Web. Star Office Presentations: a good presentation tool from a free office suite. Graphics - art Xara: a very easy to use and fast graphical images development environment. I am using it for years and my favorite illustration tool. Gimp - GNU Image Manipulation Program: an excellent, free, graphical images development environment, for Linux, with a port for Windows. Xara: a very easy to use and fast graphical images development environment. I am using it for years and is my favorite illustration tool.
Graphics - editor Lview: the basic graphical editor and conversion tool in Windows 95/NT, but is not free. Xnview is almost as good, is free, but does not yet do transparent images. NOTEs:

Connection tool: CyberKit allows you to ping, traceroute, and do name lookout, also whois, finger,etc.
