I. Descriptive Information                                                         

Critical and in-depth examination of the research evidence for theories of leadership and job satisfaction. Using motivation as a central concept, students gain an understanding of how group dynamics and personal, environmental and cultural factors influence organizational behaviors. Students work in teams to solve performance-related problems presented in case studies. Lab fee may be required. Prerequisite: APPL 641 or approval of program director. This course is open only to the following majors: Applied Psychology or Certificate in Professional Counseling Studies. Other majors may take this course with departmental permission only.

II. Student Learning Outcomes: At the completion of the course the student will be able to:

(1) Analyze causes for organizational behavior to develop effective ways to improve work performance.

(2) Discuss how group activity may facilitate or inhibit work performance.

(3) Work collaboratively with effectively with others to solve problems related to organizational behavior.

III. Class format: Assigned readings will be discussed. Ideas and conclusions generated from the discussions will be used by groups to solve problems presented in case studies. Case studies will be discussed in class and on Sakai

V. Course requirements for each student:

·       *Posting of comments on Sakai for assigned readings   (Instructions)

·        Submission of  Reports for each of the three Harvard Business School cases  (Instructions).

·        Class participation

·        Completion of the mid-term and final exams.

·       Attendance is not mandatory but will be recorded

* NOTE: Failure to submit the summaries and questions may result in a 10% grade decrement

 VI. Assessment:

1.     Exams: Two written exams (essay and short answer): midterm and final exam covering course content

2.     HBS case reports

3.     Class participation to include Sakai article postings and in-class discussions

·        50 %   2 Exams (25% each)

·        30 %   3 Case data analysis reports (10% each)

·        20 %   Class participation - Sakai posts and class discussion

100% TOTAL     Grade Scale:    90-100 A; 85-89 B+;    80-84 B; 75-79 C+;   70 C

NOTE: Attendance is not required but expected
